Jesús Curiá
Jesús Curiá achieves a special magnetism in his sculptures, a halo of mystery that attracts us and responds to the deepest vibrations of our soul.
A combination of sculptural realism and contemporary ideas find balance in the work of Madrid based artist Jesús Curiá. He creates dynamic bronze sculptures with the human form as a focal point. Figurative elements of the body blend with abstraction to create forms that are ambiguous in both race and gender; simultaneously expressing tradition, modernity and cultural themes, the fundamentals of his artistic approach. These powerful forms evoke a broad range of emotions for the viewer such as joy, serenity, solidarity and occasionally, defiance. His use of primarily bronze but also, wood, stone, concrete and resin coupled with meticulous craftsmanship bring these dreamlike visions to life. By employing a variety of techniques, Curiá creates surfaces that are both visually and emotionally evocative. Rough, uneven surfaces conjure feelings of disquiet, while smooth, polished surfaces evoke a sense of serenity or even mystery. His figures are frequently elongated, distorted or fragmented. This, coupled with his contrasting surfaces, brings depth and complexity to his work, inviting us to investigate further from many different perspectives.
