Politics have been a part of art as long as leaders have been building monuments in their own honor. For the most part, the relationship has been a reverent one, with artists idealizing powerful patrons or memorializing fallen heroes—although a few artists found ways let their true feelings show along the way. Now, thanks to the 24-hour news cycle, images are everywhere. No longer is it the artist's job simply to record the images of the powerful. Today, they are free to comment, to question, and even to document history as it happens
