Miya Ando is an internationally acclaimed artist, known for innovative work manipulating light and metal. The child of Japanese and Russian parentage, her childhood was split between the Redwood specked surf town of Santa Cruz, California and a Buddhist temple in Okayama, Japan. With these inspirational backdrops forever in her mind, Ando pursues transcendent imagery by utilizing light and reflection. “My interest really is in finding a vocabulary that is universal,” she says, which perfectly explains her other big passion – Sogetsu flower arrangements. The Sogetsu style, which Ando learned as a little girl, is credited with turning the strict rules of traditional Japanese flower arrangement on their head, by making the art form open to everyone. Ando describes how the open-minded philosophy of Sogetsu profoundly influenced her approach to material in her own artwork.
