Digital artist Travess Smalley creates mashups of appropriated and computer-generated imagery that contain frenetic abstract forms and neon patterns. Interested in the relationship between digital images and their physical counterparts, Smalley recently produced a suite of sculptural works titled Prepared Scanner, a composition in clay (2012), comprised of open flatbed scanners whose trays were packed with swirling arrangements of brightly colored clay. Smalley conceived of the works as the images produced from scanning the clay, which he exhibited separately.
