Using a palette of black, white, and gray, Chiesi creates photorealistic paintings of forgotten spaces, like these moveable library stacks. While devoid of human presence, the subjects suggest everyday human activities and thus feel mysterious and symbolic.
For this year’s Art Issue, W commissioned Minter (as well as Catherine Opie, Yayoi Kusama, and Karen Kilimnik) to collaborate with George Clooney on five new portraits. All prints are for sale exclusively on Artsy, and proceeds benefit Save the Children’s Typhoon Haiyan Relief.
Arguably the best-known contemporary artist from the San Francisco Bay Area, McGee is inspired by graffiti, Op Art, and the Internet. His recent works include geometric motifs, interspersed with cartoon-like characters and recurring monikers like “DFW” (Down for Whatever).
Recalling the work of David Hockney and Peter Doig, Heidkamp’s paintings—whether of New England woodland scenes or manmade South Florida landscapes—are initially worked on outdoors and in studies, then re-conceived as large, heavily worked canvases.
