For this month’s art issue, W commissioned Opie (as well as Marilyn Minter, Yayoi Kusama, and Karen Kilimnik) to collaborate with George Clooney on five new portraits. All prints are for sale exclusively on Artsy, and proceeds benefit Save the Children’s Typhoon Haiyan Relief.
One of the most well-respected contemporary painters, Oehlen is characterized by his work’s diversity—of method, palette and genre. Recalling the methods of the Surrealists, Oehlen often moves spontaneously between seemingly contradictory processes, such as collage and color field painting.
“I use the natural processes of gravity, fluid dynamics, and friction to lay down a free flowing carbon ground,” Reilly explains of her work. The results resemble satellite photos of estuaries or deep space as well as the more earthbound imagery of trees, root-systems and explosions.
